N2  - Two-thirds of the worldʹs HIV/AIDS epidemic is in Africa. Last year alone, the disease killed 1.5 million people. They were not statistics. They were fathers and mothers, brothers and sisters, doctors and nurses, primary school teachers, electrical engineers, community leaders, finance managers, entrepreneurs, students, researchers, and farmers trying to lift their families out of poverty. Their spouses and children are now condemned to new hardship. These people died because of the unique concentration of HIV in Africa, but also because the continentʹs leaders -- and its international partners -- have been slow to respond to the epidemic.
